Declutter Your Bedroom in Just 3 Steps for a Better Night's Sleep (and Less Stress!)

If your bedroom looks more like a jumble of clothes, gadgets, and half-drunk cups of tea than a peaceful retreat, you're not alone. Most of us have been there – but what if I told you that just a few simple steps could completely transform your bedroom into a calming oasis?

Decluttering your bedroom isn’t just about tidying up; it’s about creating a space that supports your well-being, promotes better sleep, and reduces daily stress. As a professional organiser, I’ve seen how a clutter-free bedroom can instantly change the mood of a room – and I’m here to show you how to do it in a way that feels doable, not overwhelming.

1. Clear the Nightstand: One Small Step to Big Impact

First things first – let’s start with the nightstand. It’s the most important place in your bedroom (after your bed, of course) and often the biggest culprit of clutter. We tend to pile things on our nightstands: books we haven’t read, charging cables, lip balms, pens, tissues – you name it.

Here’s the trick: Aim to have only the essentials within arm’s reach – a lamp, an alarm clock (if you still use one!), and perhaps one or two things that help you wind down, like a book or a journal. Everything else can be tucked away elsewhere.

By clearing your nightstand, you immediately create a more serene vibe in your room. Plus, you’ll have a tidy surface to rest your eyes on before bed instead of staring at a mess that makes you feel stressed.

2. Tackle Your Closet (But Do It in Zones)

Next up: your closet. Yes, I know it feels like a big task, but bear with me. I’m not asking you to overhaul your entire wardrobe in one go (unless you’re ready for that – but that’s a whole other blog post!). Instead, let’s break it down into manageable zones.

Start with your hanging items – coats, jackets, and dresses. Is it time to let go of a few items that no longer fit, you don’t wear, or just don’t make you feel good? If the answer is yes, grab a donation bag and start filling it with things you can part with. If it’s a bit more daunting, take just 10 minutes to focus on one section (like jeans or t-shirts).

Pro tip: Use slim, matching hangers to make your closet look instantly more organised and give your clothes some breathing room.

After you’ve sorted through your clothes, move on to your drawers. A messy drawer full of socks, underwear, and random bits of paper can make your bedroom feel disorganised, even if the rest of the space is tidy. I’ll show you simple ways to fold or organise those items with dividers or boxes to maximise your space and make everything easy to find.

3. Under the Bed: The Sneaky Storage Solution

Now let’s talk about under the bed. If you’re like most people, this is where the clutter really piles up – old shoes, forgotten boxes, laundry baskets, and random bits and bobs that somehow made their way under there.

Take 15 minutes to tackle it: Start by pulling out everything under the bed and decide what should stay, what needs to be sorted (like paperwork or old photo albums), and what can go.

Consider investing in storage bins or boxes to store things you still need but don’t want taking up space. If you don’t have a lot of under-bed storage, or you just don’t want clutter hidden out of sight, you could also look into furniture that doubles as storage, like a bed with drawers or a storage ottoman.

Final Touch: Make Your Bed Daily

This is a simple but game-changing tip: make your bed every day. Sounds basic, right? But there’s a reason why it’s recommended by nearly every productivity expert. When your bed is made, your bedroom instantly feels tidier and more put together, even if the rest of the room needs work. Plus, it’s a small win first thing in the morning that sets a positive tone for the day.
